VEGAN
vegan vietnamese food

I have a real soft spot in my cold, cold heart for Vietnamese cuisine. I attribute this mostly to the wonderful Vietnamese restaurants and grocery stores along Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis where I lived during my years at college. In Minneapolis, Vietnamese means one thing: Mock Duck (and/or Tofu) in almost every kind of dish imaginable. Most other places I've been, it means a drastically-reduced offering that is so boring that it verges on The Default Chinese Veg Stir-Fry.

In Chicago, the Land Where Nobody Ever Heard of Mock Duck, my choices have basically been simple stir-fry dishes with tofu, and tofu spring rolls (so-so) in a couple of places. Soon, after trying the last of the 15 or so Vietnamese restaurants in my neighborhood, I will decide which one I like best, bring them a can of Mock Duck, and ask them to prepare it for me in a creative way. Wait and see...

Trieu Chau (St. Paul, MN)
Kung Pao Mock duck. Almost identical to the Lemongrass Tofu I ordered...waaay too much MSG. Christ.
Pho 999 (Chicago)
Vegetarian Pho with tofu. Not the best I've had, (Phuong Cafe in Mpls) but tasty. Where's the damn mock duck in Chicago?
Alice and Friends (Chicago)
Sister Von's Pho soup. Vietnamese-style with mock beef gristle and everything. Decent, but overcooked.

Nhu Hoa Cafe (Chicago)
Panang Curry w/ tofu, mushrooms, lemon leaves, basil, Laos chili paste.
Soy coconut/pearl smoothie.
Penny's (Chicago)
Veg. soup with tofu. I like Vietnamese cuisine because it often comes with "do-it-yourself" veggies/condiments.
Penny's (Chicago)
Vegetarian bowl thing. Penny's uses the same flavored tofu in everything; it's good but a bit repetitive.

Penny's (Chicago)
Pepper noodles. A great dish. I really love these wide rice noodles that are so popular in Chicago...but no mock duck.
Joy's Noodles (Chicago)
Fresh spring roll appetizer. Not exactly Vietnamese (more like Thai) but close, sans-pineapple and with chewy wrappers.
Argyle St. (Chicago)
Don't remember where I got this, but it's typical. Wide rice noodles w/ tofu. Fresh cilantro and Sriracha make it great.

More photos sit restless in folders, waiting to be added...
