NOTE: A vegan visitor to my site named Brendan Jaks has written to tell me that Pizza Metro's pizza crust is NOT vegan. He says that it contains egg and non-vegan margarine, contrary to what we had heard before. I haven't called to confirm this, but if true it is indeed sad news. However, if you're only vegetarian, just lactose intolerant, or a really sloppy vegan, the cheeseless pizza is really delicious!
Old review: Pizza Metro only has a couple of things for vegans to eat, but their pizza is probably my favorite in the city. They may have pasta that can be made vegan too, but if it's your first visit, skip it and try the Roasted Vegetable and Rosemary Potato pizzas with no cheese (a slice of each makes a great combo meal) instead.
The place is tiny and from all accounts very European in its decor and presentation. Not comfortable in terms of cozy chairs, but certainly inviting and pleasant, with good people-watching for sure. Lots of football (soccer for us yanks) memorabilia all over the walls and often a game on the TV. Real Italians and real good pizza, simple. Great cappuccino and espresso as well, if you like the coffee drinks.
They also have a second location (just a mile away, why? Presumably starting to franchise on the Starbucks model) at 925 N. Ashland Ave. (same Blue line stop, just walk south instead) which apparently has more seating and a somewhat expanded menu. I will go try it soon and report back on something besides the amazing pizza.

Please note: My site is NOT any kind of official "Chicago Vegan" site. For a great restaurant guide from an excellent organization, visit VegChicago.com. With the proliferation of digital cameras and cheap web hosting, I encourage every vegan to document their own good-looking vegan food to share with the world...the more the scarier!
