Scene at Arashiyama
Painted in May of 1998 while living in Kyoto, Japan. I frequently took trips exploring the city and wandering off the beaten path. Arashiyama is a popular tourist area, famous for its bridge, river, and "ukai" fishing. I walked up a mountain trail and came across this rather odd, abandoned food-stand. I don't know what it formerly was, but I love ruins and just had to stop and paint it.

Not completely abandoned, as there were soda vending machines at the far end which worked. I scribbled on the back that "this painting cost me about 20 mosquito bites."
