On the James River Bridge, 17 N. The first part of the trip was rainy and dismal.
A lovely portion of the James River Bridge.
A refreshing old-style sign on Jefferson Ave. in Newport News.
Ah, finally out of strip-mall hell and into some decent country. Matt risked our lives for this one.
It didn't take long for Jean to fall asleep in the back seat. He was even snoring.
Debbie proves that she owns the road while Matt keeps a look-out for hessians.
I was driving at this point. Locust Hill eluded us, but we did find this...
Fine double-sided sign. One side could have your shitty ad instead of that beautiful type.
Disappointed by Locust Hill and Dixie, we set sail for Shacklefords. This store was the best thing in town.
This general store had just about everything...except air fresheners.
Handsome paneling, hillbilly-chrome faux-brick skirting, the Dish... I'm hauling it home.
King and Queen Courthouse was disappointing, but it did have a big, (modern) courthouse. I think C.H. is archaic for "county seat."
Some damned, stinking factory in West Point. Saw no sign of the academy, but did fuel up and scored some vegan Cake Donuts. Yum.
Some good ruins, an abandoned restaurant along Highway 33. Had to U-turn to get to it, and wade through tall brush to take a shot of...
...the beautiful "Dining Room" sign. Old Coca-Cola signs are a dime a dozen, but that other one is amazing.
"Pull Over!" The twilight added something special to this one. Near I-64.
Out of the rear window, between Williamsburg and Newport News, Hwy 60.
Got camera-crazy with the setting sun, something magic in the light at this time of day. Self-portrait.
Over-bright gas station, glowing obscenely in the evening light. Abura-e mitai.
The sunset, as seen over Newport News Shipbuilding, was unbelievable. Absolutely fucking magnificent.
Same sunset, within 30 seconds of the last one, the camera interpreted the light very differently in the two.
Looking down the barrel of the Monitor-Merrimac tunnel. These bridges and tunnels are scary at 55mph on the Vespa.
Beautiful various blurry lights make a nice composition. Monitor-Merrimac bridge.
