Trip to Wisconsin Dells, and More... - page 3

I went to Madison, Sun Prairie, and the Wisconsin Dells for a few days on a business/vacation trip. These are the photographic evidence. June, 2004.

Driver and shipmates. Murky waters and shoreline. Sandstone! Yeah.

I think he called this "Suicide Point" or something. Forgot the goddamn guidebook at home, so I don't remember what any of this shit is called. This is Mosquito Pond or something. The dusty trail, well-traversed. Squeezing through a tight passage.

More rocks. And more ferns! Northwoods, Ducks-style. I'm a sucker for pines. Whatever.

Majestic pines, even if planted in pattern. Et cetera. HAD to go to Shipwreck Lagoon in honor of Ryno, another tribute to the college years. Got him an updated brochure, too. Played 18 holes here, scoring just one over Par. Not bad for someone who hasn't mini-golfed in years.

Shipwreck Lagoon, but not the namesake shipwreck lagoon. Frontal signage, sorry for the bass-ackwards ordering of photos. Roadside signage, kinda lackluster. This place will be closed in a few years, it's kind of run down and not that fun or interesting a course. And not nearly enough "pirate" in the presentation. Nice signage. These cages sucked my ass. I hate baseball.

Follow-up shot of Original Wisconsin Ducks facility. Supplimentary shot of that pink candy place signage. Dells Auto Museum. Monster-Truck bullshit, family fun I suppose.

Lovely sign grouping for Dells Boat Tours. Sign detail, Dells River District. Indian food in the Dells? Yes. I was very pleased to find it, but it wasn't really great, unfortunately. But I'd go back just for the novelty. I got nuts at the Showboat. Not really, I didn't.

Black Hawk Motel, Dells. Indian Trail Motel, Dells. On my way out of the Dells now, as evidenced by the Trail's End Motel. Not sure why they advertise as you're driving away from the place, towards absolutely nothing.

Amazing-looking Big Sky drive-in theater, too bad they show such bullshit movies...guess they have to to stay in business with idiot tourists everywhere. Big Sky Drive-In signage. Stopped in downtown Portage to check it out, the next few photos are from there. Cute little downtown. Fulberg's Men's Store, Portage.

Orthopaedic Surgeon with excellent 3-D lettering. "Odd Fellows, union man..." Furniture Mart signage has seen better days, Portage. Needs no explanation.

Portage Cafe was the reason I stopped to take photos in the first place, but I had to double back because there were a bunch of assholes standing around on the sidewalk talking shit when I first passed. More Portage Cafe lettering, very nice. Downtown Portage, WI. This Portage Locksmith probably gets more sex than he knows what to do with; that's the way that works.

Unknown Motel, leaving Portage. This was a little two-bit town, maybe Poynette or Arlington. Nothing much to see except this building. Excellently-crappy signage, Hwy 51. Same place, Club 51, Hwy 51. This place looked like a treasure.

Warehouse Liquors sign in Madison. Not a lot of great signs in this town, but a shitload of scooters, bearded men, and Teva sandals. And miserable beggars on State Street. Near my hotel back in Sun Prairie. Very nice brushwork, see detail in next shot. Detail of brushmanship. Back to Madison, I apparently can't make up my goddamn mind. This is all you see from anywhere withinn 2 miles of the capitol building. Woo-ha.

Badger Wash, Sun Prairie. "Our Vacuums Really Suck." Please Do Not Disturb my motel room, says the moon. Self-portrait in mirror, McGovern's.
