Trip to Wisconsin Dells, and More... - page 2

I went to Madison, Sun Prairie, and the Wisconsin Dells for a few days on a business/vacation trip. These are the photographic evidence. June, 2004.

Building the latest, greatest piece of shit tourist trap, mysteries uncovered. See it all come together... A few nice samples of type in this not-very-strong photo. A view of Lake Delton, showing where Tommy Bartlett's Shows take place. Those are ramps in the water for feats of daring. Signage for Tommy Bartlett's Shows.

Road Sign, Hwy 12. Here's that trading post again where I got all the souvenirs. I had to make a tough call here; which original painting to get Liz for $18.95...I chose the upper-left one and I think it was a wise choice, it's the most dynamic from across the room. Lake Aire Motel signage. Quite a bit of vacancy on the strip for the summer; everyone must be staying at that moronic Great Wolf Lodge or whatever the hell it is by the Interstate. Their loss.

Something or other, on the strip. Copa Cabana. This was a longstanding joke between Ryan and I, we had their shitty brochure in college. Broke just about every rule of design, including using both Brush Script AND Hobo in their logo. Motel on the strip, detail. A glimpse through the lonely trees.

Best food I ate during the whole trip, a nondescript Sushi place in a strip mall on Hwy 12 that shared its space with a Sub Shop. Weird, but delicious, with friendly service. Lake Delton Motel, at twilight. Sunset on the Interstate, 90-94. And another, same thing.

Same thing, but in the rearview mirror. I love these raggedy pine trees and swamps, especially at dusk. More of the same. Faintest bit of sunset from a parking lot, with the moon.

Ventured into downtown Wisconsin Dells (proper). Many gems of signage there. Lots of Moccasins everywhere, sometimes even twice in the same store. Airbrush wizardry. The Chalet at night, Wisconsin Dells.

Alpine Motel had a great, weird, simple sign. Cool arrow at the top didn't show; should've used flash. Another motel downtown. Palm Reader services weren't too far off. More moccasins at another Trading Post downtown.

Weird sign, obviously a landmark. Not sure what Nig is. Top Hat Motel, downtown. River Road Motel, downtown. Dells Boat Trips sign, a masterpiece of arrow work.

More huckster signage. This really is a tourist trap. Nice to spell homemade wrong on an otherwise decent sign. Summer Scene. This is where I got shaken down by a cute girl with an accent, she talked me into buying a T-shirt with a wolf and a semi truck on it for $15...not a terrible deal for a great shirt. She was an aggressive seller. You just don't see awesome stuff like this often enough. The key to my room at the Star Motel.

Star Motel as seen from behind (portion). Ferris Wheel, Dells. Cute signage and building combo, pink and white. Another shot of sign later. I really wanted to eat breakfast Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty-style, but there was a goddamn line 20 yards out the door, which kind of diminished the rustic atmosphere a bit.

Wisconsin River from the Ducks. Hawk's Beak or something that resembles it. Screaming Eagle or something. Sandstone formations, Wisconsin River. More sandstone.
