Trip to Norfolk, VA

Vanessa and I visited Norfolk, VA and surrounding areas in early May, 2004. We went for Ken Penn's wedding, to revisit old friends, take scooter rides, and breathe that Southern air...but mostly we went to spend time with Winnie.

Vegan pizza with melty nondairy cheese at the new place in Ghent (formerly my old bank building). Vanessa pets Winnie while Josie gives a kiss. The first of many, many photos of the handsome and charming Winnie Wesley. Winnie gives a look.

Tal and Robyn, our gracious hosts, at Ken's wedding. We can't thank them enough for all thier kindness. Dan C and friend at Ken's wedding. Don't ask me why I didn't take photos of the bride and groom... Winnie taking a rest... Comfort is paramount in his life. Another look at Winnie Wesley.

Did you ever notice Winnie's exceptional good looks? Hesson's Department Store signage. Side of a building in downtown Elizabeth City, NC. Cute small southern town, always dead on Sundays. Peeling vinyl letters, Elizabeth City, NC. Japanese food from a cute little restaurant in Elizabeth City. Sansai Soba with fried tofu and vegetables. Oishikatta!

Sweet potato (tempura!) and cucumber sushi, with Inarizushi barely visible in the background. Umai. Winnie taking his dinner, #1. Winnie enjoys each morsel, just look at his expression of joy and gratitude. Winnie's range of expression knows no bounds, and his whiskers are a subject not to be taken lightly.

This is one man you wouldn't want to mess with, under any circumstances. The softer side of Winnie Wesley, a rare tender moment. Resting, satiated after a fine meal, it's Winnie Wesley...the orangest cat in Ghent. Win likes to be comfortable, but he keeps a vigilant eye at all times, lest anyone try to interfere with the coziness.

Spent some great time with my former roommate and great friend Jean-Regis Gaultier, seen here at Fair Grounds coffeeshop. More JR Gault, one of just many faces. JR chewing some Uncle Eddie's Vegan Cookies. Handsome profile shot. I miss this guy.

Vanessa at Fair Grounds, enjoying the conversation no doubt. Cat's Paw Shoe Repair sign in Ghent. It's amazing to me that this profession continues to exist, given our penchant for just throwing things away and buying new. This gives me hope. Lots of creepy castles in Ghent. Long exposure of a couple witch towers. The hi-ways and bi-ways offer many gems of signage and glimpses of simpler times. Great Pepsi sign at the J&B Country Store.

Typical stretch of highway 60, one of the finest roads in the country. Just gorgeous; too bad the weather was so rainy. Stopped off to snap a few choice photos. Sandston Pharmacy has a fantastic sign, only slightly diminished by the add-on type at the bottom. It could've been much, much worse though. Trio's has a sign that's seen better days. Lucky for me, it still stands and I was able to get a photo before it disappears. Some nice blue glass squares on a window between Trio's and Dollar Power.

I just love homemade signs, especially when they're done by artists whose strengths are in areas other than "legibility" and "neatness." This is wonderfully bold and organic, straight to the point. One nice old sign replaced by a stunning newer sign, Souther Tire and Auto Repair. Masterful use of airbrush and no-nonsense sans-serif lettering. Took a day trip to Richmond down old Hwy 60, the former thoroughfare (before the interstate). I really love this little donut shop "Country Style Donuts" and hope it stays there forever. Through the window of Country Style Donuts. Excellent hand-lettering throughout, like stepping back in time.

This place makes me glad to be alive, what a treasure, not to mention Endangered Species. Fading signage, Richmond, VA. I took a bunch of shots of typical Richmond buildings, as I am really captivated by the architecture there. Typical street housing, Richmond, VA.

Broad Street in downtown Richmond has seen better days; lots of businesses are closed and the feeling is one of abandonment in many parts. Still there are some remarkable signs to be seen and hopefully it won't all be torn down... ...to make way for shitty shopping centers, parking lots, Starbucks, chain stores, and other homogenous bullshit (like just about everything else in America). Fish Market, Broad Street. Vanessa liked the little illustrations, they're cute. Style Craft has been supplanted by Campus Convenience, but has left its mark nonetheless. Richmond, VA.
